Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp

Cold Steel are famous for their approach to knives, dedicated as they are to producing the strongest, sharpest knives in the world. This is a goal they have been looking to attain since their formation in 1980 and their vision remains completely unwavering.

The Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp fits their philosophy perfectly as it has been designed to be as tough as possible with it’s drop forged unibody construction.

Drop forging means that the knife has been ‘die stamped’ from a single piece of steel. The Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp has been drop forged from a single piece of steel and the blade, handle and tang are all a single piece of high carbon steel. This means that there is nothing to come loose, break or wear out.

The Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp is made from high carbon 52100 steel. This is a high toughness steel that bearings are made of, it is designed to be incredibly hard wearing and is ideal for tough fixed blade knives – especially for something like the Drop Forged Wasp with it’s piercing capability.

The blade is a double edged dagger with a very sharp point designed for piercing. Using 52100 steel means that the tip won’t break when being used to puncture and pierce – in the Cold Steel video (below) you can see the President of Cold Steel using the Drop Forged Wasp to puncture sheet steel!

This video demonstrates just how tough the Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp actually is. The knife is really put through its paces and the tip stays intact, which is very impressive.

Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp blade dimensions

The 52100 steel blade is quite long at 6 3/4″ and is ‘wasp waisted’ – basically means that is starts narrow, then widens before narrowing again toward the handle. This means that it cuts on the way in and on the way out as both edges of the blade are sharpened.

Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp in the hand

In the hand the knife feels incredibly comfortable – the synthetic scales feel textured and grippy. The scales on this knife are easily removable thanks to two small screws on either side of the handle. The blade has a nice balance between the handle and the blade and could be handy to use as a thrower if you were so inclined! This knife feels substantial yet not too heavy at all – you could use this all day long without getting tired.

Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp handle

The solid tang peeps out at the bottom of the blade to create a wide flat pommel, which would be great for hammering and striking, with a lanyard hole completing the picture.

Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp in its sheath

The sheath, as you would expect from Cold Steel, is a super tough Secure-Ex® kydex affair. It has a strong velcro and popper belt loop and enough slots and lashing holes to give you a variety of carry options. The blade slides into the sheath and fits with a satisfying and confidence giving snap – once in place it isn’t going anywhere and that is before you use the handle securing strap.

All in all, this is a super strong knife, easy on the eye and in the hand. It has immense piercing power yet it’s controllable enough for general cutting and slicing. If you’re looking for something a bit different to the norm and require a knife with that Cold Steel strength look no further than the Drop Forged Wasp.

You get a lot of knie for the money with the Cold Steel Drop Forged Wasp. It’s one of our best sellers and once you get one in your hands, it is easy to understand why!
