Pull Through Sharpeners

The ‘pull through’ sharpener is probably familiar to most people. They are a quick and easy way to get a blade sharpened. Using them is incredibly straightforward – you simply place the blade in the ‘V’ shaped slot and pull it towards yourself.

The angles on the sharpener are already pre-set, so you don’t have to worry about getting the angle of the blade correct.

Some are single stage sharpeners with just a single coarseness of grit. Some have different levels of grit for more refined sharpening.

It’s quick and convenient to use a pull through sharpener, but won’t necessarily get you the best results. The main problem is that the sharpener can actually cause some damage to the blade edge by taking off too much material resulting in a jagged, uneven edge. It would be sharp, but it’s not a refined edge by any means.

If you want a really fine, polished edge, this is not the method we would recommend, however, it will get a knife sharp and usable quickly, so it entirely depends on your particular situation and how much time and effort you want to put in.
